Merrick Information
Merrick is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 22,764. The name Merrick is taken from "Meroke", the name (meaning peaceful) of the Algonquin tribe formerly indigenous to the area. It is served by the Merrick station on the Long Island Rail Road.
The only word used by more than two dozen residents recently asked to describe the unincorporated 10.5-square- mile village of Merrick, which is 35 miles from New York and one expressway exit from Jones Beach, was ''suburbia.'' Near Lakeside Elementary School is a willow- bordered pond where duck-feeding is allowed, but not ice-skating. Tennis courts and baseball fields run by the Town of Hempstead are nearby, as are a swimming pool and indoor ice rink run by Nassau County.
The physical and symbolic center of Merrick is the Long Island Rail Road station, where 1,078 parkings spaces are usually full by 7 A.M. every workday. The railroad platform divides North Merrick from South Merrick.
The town is actually part of two different school systems: the Merrick Union Free School District - Lakeside, Birch and Chatterton Elementary Schools - and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, consisting of Brookside, Merrick Avenue, Grand Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue Junior High Schools and J. F. Kennedy, John J. Calhoun and W. C. Mepham High Schools. |
